The 1910 Town-class design leads through the Atlantic cruiser proposals toward the Hawkins and County classes. This ancestry links the old ships to the Royal Navy's larger ocean-cruiser tradition. The 1930s Town class follows the smaller scout-cruiser and C-class line more closely. Experience with the County class still supplied some crossover between the design families. Sharing the Town name therefore does not make the two classes direct successors in design.
