Tools that shaped and sealed a wooden hull

A practical tour of the adze, axes, saws, chisels, mauls, and caulking tools behind wooden-hull construction.

Notes

Shipwrights used varied personal tool kits rather than one standard set. The adze was central to both rough shaping and fine finishing, while axes, saws, gouges, long chisels, augers, and heavy mauls handled cutting, boring, and fastening. Eighteenth-century tool steel could hold a fine edge, and caulking was essential to make plank seams watertight. These skills turned irregular timber into a durable working hull.
