What Tiger's power figures reveal about speed and endurance

Boiler ratings, trial claims, and fuel consumption show both the uncertainty of official speed figures and Tiger's major endurance gain over Queen Mary.

Notes

Tiger's 39 dual-fuel water-tube boilers supplied turbine sets rated at 85,000 shaft horsepower, with much higher output possible under forced conditions. Official language assigning large power increases only tiny speed gains deserves skepticism, especially because wartime trials complicate direct comparison. Tiger could steam about 3,300 nautical miles at 24 knots, roughly 900 miles farther than Queen Mary at that speed. That endurance mattered to the global cruiser role and shows why battlecruiser design cannot be reduced to belt thickness alone.
