New boilers reshape Tiger's machinery layout

Oil firing and Nelson-era boilers could replace Tiger's 39-boiler plant with a much smaller, more powerful arrangement while freeing internal and deck space.

Notes

The proposed rebuild includes all-oil firing, rearranged coal-bunker spaces, and possibly new geared turbines. Reducing the funnels could free deck space for 4-inch guns: the UAD illustration uses one funnel, although a reconstruction might retain two. Tiger and Hood's 235 psi boilers provide the starting comparison with the 250 psi Admiralty three-drum boilers associated with Nelson and Rodney. Tiger's 39 boilers supported 85,000 shaft horsepower, while eight boilers in Nelson and Rodney supported 45,000. On that rough comparison, sixteen modern boilers could provide about 90,000 horsepower while occupying less space, despite being individually larger. About 30 knots is suggested as a possible result. The UAD simulation instead used 29.5 knots and performed well in exercises within the game. Its results illustrate the proposal without establishing the performance of a real reconstruction.
