Changing bearing and range with superior speed

A faster force can complicate gunnery by changing its bearing and range, even when a complete encirclement is impractical.

Notes

A faster fleet can change angle, bearing and distance more freely than a slower opponent. Those changes complicate the opponent's firing problem. Completely circling a 21-knot fleet with a 27-28-knot force is offered as a theoretical illustration. Practical sea conditions make that manoeuvre unlikely. S curves ahead of the opposing battle line provide the more plausible example of exploiting the speed difference.
