A cheaper R class that preserves speed

Three triple turrets offer a possible way to reduce cost while keeping a fast battle line.

Notes

Three triple 15-inch turrets, with two forward and one aft, offer a possible R-class economy that preserves speed. The ships' length and beam could make that arrangement preferable to saving money by accepting a slower battle line. The scenario could repeat a procurement compromise: the navy wants six ships, the Treasury wants two, and four are agreed with four more if circumstances require them. Eight R-class ships were ordered, while five were built historically. If the war began later and construction were further advanced, all eight could potentially be completed. Together with six Queen Elizabeths, that would yield fourteen battleships. Their speed remains conditional on the design branch adopted; the R class could retain its historical emphasis on a cheaper battle-line ship or pursue greater capability. Its historical armour arrangement is judged better than Queen Elizabeth's in this comparison.
