Three navies, three reasons for multi-carrier operations

British, American, and Japanese carrier concentration looked similar in practice but grew from different operational problems.

Notes

Japan sought to coordinate carrier strikes inside an attritional campaign plan, while the United States emphasized offensive scouting and damaging raids. Britain concentrated on keeping a carrier force and its flight decks operating despite battle damage and the immense distance between the South China Sea and home repair yards. Facilities in Australia, Singapore, and India could support some work but did not equal Britain's industrial base. British armour, paired deployments, maintainability, and forward repair capacity therefore formed one connected doctrine.
