Chapter · 1:11-4:27

The counterfactual is shell quality control, not a paint colour

The scenario asks what changes if Britain adopts dependable shell trials and manufacture before Jutland, rather than simply issuing a later Greenboy pattern early.

Notes

The familiar Greenboy question is better understood as a question about quality control, proof testing, and the development of British heavy shells before Jutland. Peacetime tests had failed to keep pace with changes in armour, guns, and warships. Unreliable fuzes, premature bursts, and broken projectiles could squander a hit that had already penetrated armour. A plausible earlier reform might produce a shell with a different filling or appearance while still delivering the performance associated with the later solution. The counterfactual follows an earlier testing system rather than the premature issue of one historically named projectile.
