The Colossus and the limits of maximum battleship design

A deliberately absurd 400,000-ton design tests how armour, huge guns, torpedoes, and machinery interact when practical limits are ignored.

Notes

The game's options are pushed toward an almost unsinkable battleship with extreme armour, maximum bulkheads, 20.9-inch guns, six-inch triple secondaries, torpedoes, radar, and the machinery needed to move the hull. The thought experiment is deliberately impractical, exposing how quickly protection, armament, range, and propulsion drive displacement above 400,000 tons. Even forced-draught geared turbines and enormous funnels become part of the attempt to move a hull carrying armour up to the game's maximum. The result is named Colossus and would only be usable in cheat mode, keeping the exercise separate from feasible design history. Within its First World War counterfactual, the ship's power comes from presenting contemporary fleets with no symmetrical answer.
