Technology gaps and cost-driven follow-on warships

Alaska and two Royal Navy battleship generations illustrate why technology and cost complicate claims that one warship class was simply better than another.

Notes

A comparison between Alaska and early treaty cruisers cautions against treating better performance as proof of exceptional design. Roughly a decade of technological and shipbuilding development separates them, so a later and much larger ship should outperform its predecessors. The Queen Elizabeth and Revenge or R classes provide an example of a navy following an excellent class with a less capable one. Cost often led navies to accept that reduction in capability. Warships make more sense when compared within their design generation and budget rather than by headline performance alone.
