The Taurus problem was complexity, not a dramatic power gain

The Taurus XII's modest power increase mattered less than the maintenance challenge of its more complex twin-row radial layout.

Notes

Accounts that portray the later Taurus XII as an enormous horsepower leap over the Taurus II overstate the quoted increase of about 65 horsepower. Raw output cannot explain the engine's development story. The important distinction was the multiplication of components and interactions in a twin-row radial compared with the Pegasus's single-row arrangement. That complexity created unfamiliar reliability and servicing demands even though the Taurus drew on established radial-engine ideas rather than wholly novel technology.
