One duplex mechanism behaves differently across launch platforms

Royal Navy torpedo trouble illustrates how a common mechanism can fail differently when launched from surface ships, aircraft, and submarines.

Notes

The Royal Navy also experienced submarine-torpedo problems during the Second World War, though the causes differed from those in other navies. A duplex-style mechanism was adapted across surface-launched, air-launched, and submarine-launched weapons. Each platform exposed the system to different stresses and operating conditions. Problems therefore appeared in different forms even when the underlying design idea was shared. Component commonality still has to be tested against the complete launch environment.
