T12 Cloudmaker and the limits of giant bomb carriage

The T12 Cloudmaker and a two-Grand-Slam B-29 configuration illustrate the modifications associated with exceptionally large bunker-busting bombs.

Notes

The T12 Cloudmaker is recalled as a roughly 43,000-pound bomb, approximately twice the size of Grand Slam, intended for the B-36. A modified B-29 served as the test aircraft, with a wing-root mounting recalled for the weapon. Surviving empty casings in the United States are also mentioned. A separate recollection concerns planning for the invasion of Japan, when the US Army Air Forces investigated carrying two Grand Slams on a B-29 for bunker attacks. A photograph is described with one bomb under each wing. These examples concern modified aircraft and proposed or experimental loads.
