Chapter · 29:31-32:51

Sverdlov's speed, gun battery, and armour scheme

A technical tour covers the class's 32.5-knot speed, long cruising range, twelve six-inch guns, heavy secondary battery, torpedoes, and extensive armour.

Notes

The design combined an 18-knot cruising speed for roughly 9,000 nautical miles with a top speed of about 32.5 knots, giving it both reach and the ability to reposition quickly. Six boilers supplied two geared-turbine shafts rated at about 110,000 horsepower. Twelve 152 mm guns, twelve 100 mm guns, thirty-two 37 mm anti-aircraft guns, and ten torpedo tubes produced a formidable visible battery. Belt, deck, turret, conning-tower, bulkhead, and steering protection made the ship more than an oversized peacetime showpiece. The figures explain how the class could combine presence, raiding, and task-group leadership instead of serving only as a prestige display.
