The Surveyor of the Navy was a senior technical and naval-architectural office. Its design functions continued through the later Chief Naval Constructor and Director of Naval Construction, while administrative duties moved elsewhere. Royal George survived several changes in senior direction: Jacob Acworth, Joseph Allin, Thomas Slade, and William Bately brought different approaches across a long construction period. The builders reconciled those approaches and completed a successful ship. Slade then treated her as an inspiration rather than a literal template for Victory.
