The build begins with the largest Japanese battleship the simulation will permit, then adds very heavy main and secondary batteries to a broad, shallow hull. The arrangement rapidly becomes overweight, forcing reductions in armour and protection before the ship can be launched. A more fundamental problem remains: its pitch is severe enough that increasing draft is necessary to bring the motion down to an acceptable level. Shallow draft and extreme beam cannot provide free displacement when the ship still has to serve as a stable gun platform. The finished design looks formidable, but its hull behaviour exposes the naval-architecture penalty behind the spectacle.

A super-battleship cannot ignore pitch and draft
The maximum-displacement Japanese battleship shows why hull proportions and seakeeping can overturn an otherwise impressive gun arrangement.
