Planning ahead by securing basic needs first

A comparison between Victoria 3 and Timberborn shows why strategy begins with dependency chains rather than the most visible production goal.

Notes

Victoria 3 rewards thinking three or four steps ahead, a demand that can catch out players accustomed to reacting to events. Timberborn illustrates the same approach when timber production is delayed until housing, population growth, water and basic food are secure. More workers are needed for later industry, and they need beds and sustenance before that production can expand. Berries, chestnuts and carrots are enough for this early stage. The immediate priority is to establish the population and its supplies before pushing into further production.
