The Royal Navy's Type 26 can combine anti-submarine warfare with Tomahawk strike, but its role remains defined by the escort mission. Hunter and CSC are presented as ships that retain submarine-hunting equipment while adding more credible anti-ship and area-air-defence options. Canada's separate Sea Ceptor provision could leave Mk 41 cells available for a mixed load of longer-ranged air-defence and strike weapons. The distinction is one of design emphasis: a specialist with secondary capabilities is not the same as a general-purpose ship that also hunts submarines.

Specialist British escort or all-round Commonwealth combatant?
The British version is treated as an anti-submarine specialist with useful extras, while the Australian and Canadian versions make a more deliberate all-round compromise.
