Sovremenny spends displacement on flexibility

An 8,000-ton full-load hull gives Sovremenny room for ASW weapons, helicopter support, 130 mm guns, and a broader escort role beyond the bastion.

Notes

At about 8,000 tons full load, Sovremenny is a dramatic jump from earlier Soviet destroyers. The ship retains four torpedo tubes in two twin launchers and RBU-1000 ASW rockets, while a Ka-27 and telescopic hangar support operations farther from shore. A landing pad alone suits aircraft that can return to land after refueling or rearming; a hangar becomes more useful beyond the bastion. Twin 130 mm guns add shore-bombardment value while remaining intended as general-purpose weapons against surface and air targets. Close-in guns and the wider weapons fit aim for a flexible escort able to sustain several roles. More displacement buys aviation support and operational versatility alongside a larger missile battery.
