Salt water, gun liners and rapid barrel wear

A vulnerable liner material and projectile engagement are blamed for wear severe enough to undermine the main guns' expected service life.

Notes

The ammunition allowance is given as 150 rounds for each main gun. The selected barrel lining was especially susceptible to salt water. Combined with the way the projectile engaged the barrel, this reportedly multiplied wear by as much as five in some examples. Some barrels barely survived the full 150-round allowance, compared with an expected life of roughly 1,000 rounds or more. Improvements came over time, though the extent to which they solved the problem remains uncertain. Material experimentation needed stronger quality control.
