A patrol aircraft works as one component in a wider sensor network. SOSUS offers fixed underwater listening coverage, while aircraft add sonobuoys and magnetic-anomaly detection over the suspected contact area. The combined system constrains a submarine's options: changing depth or evading one sensor may expose it to another. Once the network localises the contact, a frigate can maintain pressure in peacetime or aircraft can attack with torpedoes in war.

SOSUS, sonobuoys, and maritime patrol aircraft
Fixed underwater sensors and patrol aircraft create overlapping anti-submarine layers that make a detected submarine easier to localise and track.
