The Sopwith Snipe and the handling effects of a rotary engine

The Bentley BR2 gave the Sopwith Snipe conventional throttle control but imposed strong gyroscopic forces on its light airframe.

Notes

The Sopwith Snipe combined a relatively small, light airframe with a large and heavy Bentley BR2 rotary engine. That rotating mass produced marked gyroscopic effects in the aircraft's handling. The BR2 had a more conventional operating cycle than the monosoupape engine recalled in the Avro 504K. Varying power with the throttle was therefore comparatively orthodox, even though the engine's rotating weight strongly affected how the aircraft flew.
