Recasting the Blackburn Skua as a strike aircraft

Judging the Skua as a Swordfish replacement rather than a fighter could produce a more coherent role but would leave a separate fighter requirement.

Question

Would the Blackburn Skua have been more successful as a dive-bomber and torpedo-bomber combination rather than a fighter?

Short answer

Possibly, but it would have become a Swordfish replacement and forced the Navy to procure a separate fighter.

Notes

A Skua designed from the start as a combined dive bomber and torpedo bomber would replace the Swordfish rather than compete as the fleet fighter. Its reasonably capable engine makes the idea plausible enough to examine. The service would still need another fighter. The enlarged strike requirement might also reproduce some of the development problems later encountered by the Barracuda.
