Mechanical efficiency alone cannot determine a shipyard's best crane system. A yard expecting continuously occupied berths can justify a larger initial investment for faster and more economical work. Intermittent demand changes that calculation, as do urgent delivery schedules and variations in the kinds of ships being built. Standardising components or assembling whole bulkheads away from the berth changes the loads cranes must handle. Cold climates introduce another constraint: enclosed building berths, including the brick structures described in Russian yards, require suitable cranes inside them.

Choosing shipyard cranes for workload and construction methods
A crane installation's economics depend on how often berths are occupied, how ships are assembled, and whether the yard needs protection from cold weather.
