Woodcarving as a shipwright's specialist craft

Shipwrights often carved warship decoration, while Portsmouth's carving school and Pierre Puget's Toulon workshop show how the specialist craft was organized.

Notes

Many shipwrights also worked as woodcarvers until elaborate ship decoration declined in the mid-eighteenth century. Portsmouth once maintained a school for woodcarvers. Pierre Puget ran a workshop at Toulon in the seventeenth century and became one of the best-known figures in the craft. These examples place warship ornament within dockyard training and specialist workshop practice.
