An expensive failure the Royal Navy could learn from

Shannon cost roughly £304,000-£306,000 with armament, but Britain's industrial capacity allowed later cruiser designs to improve beyond this costly experiment.

Notes

Shannon's hull cost about £233,000 and her machinery another £53,000, with total cost including armament estimated near £304,000-£306,000. That was a substantial investment for a ship whose useful overseas and front-line service proved very limited. The failed design did not mean the broader shipbuilding system was incapable of improvement. Britain's maritime industrial capacity allowed the Royal Navy to absorb the mistake, learn from it, and move toward more successful cruiser classes.
