Chapter · 11:31-18:41

A battlecruiser category for Dominion flagships

The central counterfactual gives Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India, and Canada one battlecruiser apiece under a separate treaty category.

Notes

A separate battlecruiser category offers the most plausible political middle ground. The American Senate could preserve the battleship ratio it cared about, while Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India, and Canada each gained one prestigious flagship. Britain and the United States would receive five battlecruisers apiece, Japan three, and France and Italy a combined fractional allowance. HMS Hood supplies the practical size benchmark for the 42,000-ton category, although the proposed ceiling sits slightly below her displacement. The proposed limits distinguish 35,000-ton, 16-inch battleships from 42,000-ton, 15-inch battlecruisers. Aircraft carriers would receive a separate 28,000-ton ceiling, preventing the new battlecruiser category from simply consuming the hulls historically converted to carriers.
