A command ship needs the strongest practical radar and sensor suite to build a detailed picture of the battlespace. Battleships historically carried deployable craft, including third-class torpedo boats, so offboard vehicles extend an old capital-ship function. The Type 26 mission bay supplies the model for a much larger configurable space able to support several Merlin- or Chinook-sized helicopters, drones, boats, containers, and uncrewed surface or underwater craft. This aviation and mission capacity falls short of a carrier air wing but gives the battleship organic scouting, logistics, and anti-submarine options.
