Sea King AEW wins the procurement argument

An existing Sea King-family AEW solution beats new tilt-wing or fixed-wing aircraft because it meets the threat with common training, logistics, and production.

Notes

The Kirov missile threat creates a clear need for airborne early warning, and the Sea King AEW concept already existed before the Falklands even though it lacked funding. Four AEW helicopters are the minimum addition to a 24-Sea-Harrier and 20-ASW-Sea-King air group. That mix can sustain anti-submarine and air-defence missions while retaining some strike capacity. More exotic aircraft might offer attractive performance, but all three Commonwealth navies already know the Sea King family and have training, maintenance, and logistics invested in it. Presenting a development as another version of equipment already in service can also make funding easier, with the Hornet and Super Hornet offered as an analogy. Institutional commonality therefore outweighs the most elegant technical option.
