Naval supremacy can survive serious ship losses

Losing Hood, Ark Royal, Prince of Wales, and Repulse hurt British power without ending sea control because Britain could still operate, deny enemy use, and build replacements.

Notes

Major Royal Navy losses in 1941 have to be separated from a loss of naval supremacy. Hood's destruction was followed by Bismarck's loss, while Germany and Italy had no carrier equivalent to Ark Royal. Britain also reconstituted an Indian Ocean force soon after losing Prince of Wales and Repulse. Britain and the United States continued launching ships throughout the war, while German, Italian, and Japanese new construction contributed much less. Supremacy therefore meant retaining the ability to use the sea, contest enemy use, and replace enough strength to keep exercising operational choice despite casualties.
