A Dido hull reshaped around 4.5-inch mounts

Models of Scylla reveal how upper-deck 4.5-inch mounts and altered superstructure changed a familiar Dido hull.

Notes

On the museum model, the early 4.5-inch Mark I upper-deck mounts look closer to destroyer equipment than to the standard Dido battery. Scylla and Charybdis retained the same basic hull and machinery arrangement as conventional Didos, but their bridge and forward superstructure were rearranged around the new gun fit. Their torpedo tubes also sat amidships rather than on a destroyer's centreline. The boxier, more destroyer-like result shows how an armament substitution can change a ship's character without creating an entirely new class.
