The missed network logic of a Scotland-Northern Ireland tunnel

A proposed fixed link made most sense when paired with high-speed rail across Britain and Ireland rather than treated as an isolated tunnel.

Notes

A serious proposal around the Channel Tunnel's completion would have built a fixed link between Scotland and Northern Ireland. Its strongest logic came from treating the tunnel as part of an integrated high-speed rail network rather than an isolated prestige project. Connecting Edinburgh, Northern Ireland, Dublin, and continental routes could have enabled through rail travel from Dublin toward cities such as Berlin. The proposal appears here as a missed opportunity to connect lines that were already being discussed.
