Salamis and the opportunity to inspect German shipbuilding

Greece's German battleship order offered a possible opportunity for the British admiral advising its navy to examine German construction.

Notes

Greece paid extra to place the Salamis order in Germany while many other customers preferred Britain's capacity and delivery schedules. A British admiral was helping organize the Greek navy at the time. One suggested reason for choosing a German yard was the opportunity for him to examine German construction closely. In the delayed-war scenario, Greece would probably receive Salamis because war would no longer interrupt completion. Germany is described as having had no interest in completing the ship for its own fleet.
