The 2025 case for keeping Type 45 in service until Type 83

The November 2025 assessment uses Type 45 commissioning dates and a service life of up to forty years to judge the replacement timetable manageable.

Question

Can the Type 45 destroyers remain in service until Type 83 is ready to replace them?

Short answer

The November 2025 expectation is that they can, provided the class achieves the service life of up to forty years envisaged here.

Notes

The November 2025 assessment places the start of Type 83 construction somewhere in the 2030s, probably late in the decade. A service life of up to forty years is the basis for expecting Type 45 to bridge that interval. Daring was launched in 2006 and commissioned in 2009, while Duncan was launched in 2010 and commissioned in 2013. Those dates put the class below the midpoint of that assumed service life at the time of recording. The confidence in a manageable replacement timetable therefore depends on the ships achieving the long service lives envisaged here.
