Rolling Burke production can lock the US Navy into one design

Continuous Arleigh Burke production is efficient, but the low-risk line makes it harder to justify a replacement when size, missile load, or systems integration demands change.

Notes

A rolling Arleigh Burke construction programme makes repeated orders for a familiar ship more efficient. In this assessment, that advantage also creates pressure to fill almost every escort requirement with another Burke. Moving to a new design requires development money, production changeover, and acceptance of technical risk. The resulting design question is whether the established hull remains large enough, carries enough missiles, and has the configuration needed for the systems the navy wants to install.
