The RNAS in Belgium and the recovery of downed pilots

The Royal Naval Air Service combined coastal-front support with improvised pilot recovery while the Navy developed aviation ships.

Notes

The Royal Naval Air Service was already supporting the army in Belgium along the coastal end of the British front by late 1914. Its work extended beyond aircraft operations from ships. One example of its improvisation was taking Rolls-Royce cars into no man's land to recover downed pilots. That operational experience developed alongside the Navy's work on better aviation ships.
