Chapter ยท 5:47-10:28

Rivers and railways as the western theatre's highways

Shiloh is placed within a campaign where rivers, rail connections, and landing places determined operational mobility.

Notes

Poor roads made the western war a contest of logistics and manoeuvre. Armies followed rivers and railways because those systems could carry troops, artillery, food, and other heavy supplies at operational speed. Pittsburgh Landing mattered because vessels could unload there and connect with nearby rail lines. Control of transport infrastructure, rather than possession of an isolated battlefield, shaped the campaign and the wider western theatre.
