Rival navies still depend on shared propulsion technology

China's imported turbines fit a longer naval history in which even strategic competitors buy scarce propulsion expertise from the same industrial suppliers.

Notes

The Type 051B's Ukrainian turbines and the early Type 052's American machinery were not unusual shortcuts in naval development. Parsons supplied turbines for German battlecruisers during the Anglo-German naval arms race, while Curtis and Brown exchanged improved turbine designs across the Atlantic. Strategic competition does not automatically separate supply chains when only a few firms can deliver machinery of the required quality. These examples place imported propulsion within a longer pattern of navies buying a practical bridge while developing their own industrial capacity.
