The Ripon II's nose enclosed a 570-horsepower Napier Lion engine in fitted cowlings. Removing the earlier nose-mounted radiator and its shutters gave the nose a pointed profile. The spinner of a larger two-bladed wooden airscrew emphasized that shape. Cooling came from quadrant-shaped retractable radiators behind the engine bay, which the pilot could extend from both sides of the fuselage.
