Royal Fleet Auxiliary helicopters expand task-force ASW capacity

Embarking ASW helicopters on auxiliaries adds stable flight decks, preserves carrier capacity, and turns support ships into valuable contributors to a distributed task force.

Notes

The squadron's long list of carrier and auxiliary deployments becomes a lesson in judging a fleet by its combined capacity rather than one hull at a time. A Royal Fleet Auxiliary offers helicopters a relatively large, stable flight deck without consuming space or operating cycles on the carrier. Three or four embarked helicopters can conduct ASW patrols and move stores while a frigate coordinates the search. The arrangement also creates a real operational tradeoff when the auxiliary must leave the group to resupply. Sending it away may temporarily remove its helicopters and a protective frigate, so the timing of replenishment becomes a decision about combat power as well as logistics.
