HMS Repulse carried triple low-angle four-inch mounts for surface defence and separate single high-angle guns for aircraft. Six twin 4.7-inch mounts would reduce the total barrel count from fifteen to twelve. Every one of those twelve guns could engage a surface target, however, compared with nine in the historical fit. The anti-aircraft battery would simultaneously rise from six effective guns to twelve. The example shows how a general-purpose weapon can produce more usable firepower in either tactical problem even while reducing the raw number of barrels.

Repulse trades two specialist batteries for one common fit
Replacing Repulse's mixed low- and high-angle four-inch guns with six twin 4.7-inch mounts increases the number of weapons available against either aircraft or surface attackers.
