Repulse became the senior sister in First World War service and fired 54 fifteen-inch shells at the Second Battle of Heligoland Bight, scoring a hit on the light cruiser Konigsberg while covering the British withdrawal. Her post-war reconstruction replaced the six-inch belt with nine-inch armour, strengthened protection over the magazines, and enlarged the anti-torpedo bulges. She and Hood then projected British power on the Empire Cruise, while Renown often served as a royal-tour vessel. The contrast matters because Repulse's later modernisation was constrained by the need to keep valuable fast ships in service.
