Repulse beyond the loss of Force Z

Repulse is often remembered for her sinking, while her earlier service and the maneuver, numbers, and luck involved in the final air attack receive less attention.

Notes

Public memory compresses Repulse into the loss of Force Z, overlooking her interwar world cruise, royal duties, and voyage carrying the Prince of Wales to Africa. Her final defence involved repeated manoeuvre against air attack before overwhelming numbers and chance combined against her. Aerial torpedoes were imperfect weapons, but a successful hit opened the hull below the waterline and could impose catastrophic flooding. The Washington Naval Treaty nevertheless allowed defensive improvements against aircraft and submarines, showing that planners already treated both as serious threats.
