How historians handle gaps in naval aviation records

Documentary proof and informed inference lead to different degrees of certainty when tracing possible Royal Navy influence on Vickers aircraft work.

Notes

The development of a British dive-bombing sight shows how institutional relationships may leave indirect rather than explicit evidence. Vickers already received extensive naval work and maintained regular contact with naval officials, creating plausible channels for informal encouragement. The resulting sight helped make the Blackburn Skua a highly accurate dive bomber even though the surviving record does not document a direct naval commission for its development. Opportunity, motive, and organizational links can support a hypothesis without turning it into a documentable fact.
