Rattler, Renard and Princeton establish screw propulsion

Screw propulsion preserved sailing performance and broadside guns, while trials and Princeton's gun accident shaped its adoption.

Notes

Removing side paddles allowed steam warships to retain a conventional broadside battery. Screw propellers also interfered less with movement under sail. Rattler's trials encouraged further British screw construction, although sailing warships and paddle frigates continued to be built. Renard's sailing performance helped secure acceptance of the screw as supplementary propulsion for ships that would still sail when possible. In the United States, Ericsson gained Captain Stockton's support and Princeton introduced a telescopic funnel. The explosion of Princeton's experimental Peacemaker gun killed two cabinet members and generated publicity that overshadowed the vessel's success with screw propulsion.
