Rateau turbines and France's propulsion bottleneck

French turbine designs could be excellent, but metallurgy and supply-chain limits often forced warship builders to rely on Parsons machinery.

Notes

Cruiser endurance and speed made machinery a first-order design concern. French engineers could devise capable Rateau turbines, yet domestic firms struggled to manufacture enough precise components at the required quality and pace. The constraint lay in metallurgy, precision tubes, piping, and the wider supply chain rather than a lack of sound engineering ideas. Some French-built sets performed well, but delayed projects could reach the point where builders had to order Parsons machinery instead. That dependence exposed the long industrial aftereffects of inconsistent heavy-warship and component production.
