The RAF proposal prioritises tankers, intelligence and surveillance aircraft, maritime patrol, electronic warfare, and airborne early warning because they enable the wider force. Their value also makes them priority targets for opposing fighters. Small fleets create brittle capability because training, maintenance, and operations compete for the same few airframes. The illustrative E-7 Wedgetail requirement is at least nine and preferably twelve instead of three, allowing concurrent NATO, UK, surge, training, and maintenance duties. Voyager, RC-135, Eurofighter, and Wedgetail orders can expand mature support and production arrangements without funding new project offices. Additional units spread development and infrastructure costs already charged to the early aircraft while increasing the capability of the entire air force.

The RAF needs depth in enabling aircraft as well as fighters
More tankers, surveillance aircraft, maritime patrol aircraft, and E-7 Wedgetails provide the depth needed to sustain and grow British air power.
