Why did France not buy or copy a Yorktown-class carrier design?
Short answerSuitable French yards were committed to battleships, and Yorktown's Pacific-oriented design was not an ideal match for Mediterranean requirements.
NotesFrench slips large enough to build the proposed carrier were already occupied by battleships. Yorktown is judged a good design for the Pacific but unsuitable for the Mediterranean, even with more fighters aboard. Joffre had interesting design ideas of its own, although their practical operation prompted reservations. Buying a foreign design would still leave France with a building-capacity problem.
