Why did Renown carry three twin 15-inch turrets rather than fitting a fourth?
Short answerThe deleted turret freed magazine, protection, and machinery space; restoring it while keeping the speed would have required a substantially larger Hood-like ship.
NotesA fourth turret would have required its magazine, protective separation from the boilers, and the hull volume needed to support all that weight. Removing the turret released space for machinery and kept the battlecruiser within a practical size. Adding it back would also make the ship heavier and demand still more horsepower to preserve speed. In the video's shorthand, a four-turret Renown becomes something much closer to Hood. The answer demonstrates why a turret count cannot be changed without redesigning the propulsion and protection around it.
