Privateer and Shackleton are harder to compare than their service dates suggest

The two maritime patrol aircraft began as near contemporaries, but the Shackleton's long service and later airborne-early-warning role make simple superiority claims misleading.

Question

How much better was the Avro Shackleton than the Consolidated PB4Y-2 Privateer?

Short answer

In their original maritime-patrol role they were broadly comparable contemporaries; the Shackleton's much longer career and later AEW service make it look more dominant in retrospect.

Notes

As initial maritime-patrol designs, the PB4Y-2 Privateer and Avro Shackleton belong to roughly the same late-war and immediate-postwar generation, with different strengths. The Privateer left front-line American service relatively early. The Shackleton served in maritime patrol until Nimrod replacement and then continued as an airborne-early-warning platform until 1991. Later longevity should not be confused with a clean like-for-like technical comparison at introduction.
